When Time Froze
In the quaint little town of Maplewood, life moved at a slow pace. The population of the town mostly constituted energetic youngsters and old wise men who told great stories. Everyone knew everyone, and their biggest celebration was when Bryan Clarke, a local hero, had won a science award.
Bryan, loved by all, was an eccentric scientist. Often lost in his world of equations and theorems, he was affectionately recognized as Maplewood's very own Einstein. Bryan’s latest invention was a timepiece, he fondly called it the 'Chronos Bracelet'. Unlike any ordinary watch, it had the power to manipulate time.
One gloomy Wednesday, Bryan was in his lab working on a calibration for his Chronos Bracelet. Little did he know his experiment would entirely change the course of Maplewood’s existence. As Bryan wound up the calibration test, something unexpected happened. The bracelet emitted a radiant glow, immediately time around him stopped. Bryan was puzzled.
He stepped out of his lab and ventured into the unanticipated stillness. Birds were hanging mid-air, children suspended midway on swings, even the rustling leaves were frozen mid rustle. At first, Bryan was in disbelief, then fear crept in, replaced by a gigantic wave of realization. The Chronos Bracelet had done something unexpected; it had frozen time.
Frantically, Bryan skirted back to his lab, hoping to reverse the mishap. He tinkered with the bracelet, adjusting the dials back and forth but nothing changed. In despair, he sighed, “I wanted to control time, not stop it.”
Fearing the eternal stillness, Bryan decides to confide in his best friend, Clara, the only other soul who knows about his invention. But how could he when she, like others, was also frozen in time.
In that moment, an idea struck him. If he could transfer some energy from his functioning bracelet into Clara, she may start to move in this time-frozen world. With trembling hands, he gently put the bracelet against Clara's arm and to his relief, it worked. Clara started moving, startled at the abrupt change around her.
In disbelief, Clara listened to Bryan's tale while he kept blaming himself. A scientist she was too, Clara decided rather than dwell on the past, they needed to focus on fixing the problem. After numerous failed attempts, an old theory hit Clara. If an object can hold enough gravitational pull, it can control the flow of time around it. So, instead of adjusting time, they should focus on the controlling the impact of it via gravity alteration. But for that, they needed a large gravitational source, and the only thing in Maplewood that held such power was the old clock tower.
With the help of the villagers (one at a time brought into motion using Chronos Bracelet), they devised a complex mechanism that linked the gravitational pull of the clock tower with the bracelet. As the big hand of the tower clock struck twelve, Clara activated the bracelet. There was a flash of blinding light, after which things started moving. Children resumed their laughter. Birds spread their wings to conquer the sky. Leaves rustled with gusto. Time had started again, Maplewood was back into motion.
Bryan and Clara grinned at each other, they had done it. They decided to hide the Chronos Bracelet, it wasn’t the time to meddle with such power. They learned that there exist laws of nature, which are better left untouched.
Maplewood went back to normal, but with a story that generations would pass - the day Bryan Clarke froze time, and how Clara and he saved them all. Few believed it, while most considered it another enthralling tale spun out of the enchanting town of Maplewood.
