The Verses of Eternity
In the quiet, quaint village of Bunka, located in the heart of the celestial mountains, lived a serene monk named Li Wei. His life was overwhelmingly modest and unassuming. He was more than the village's spiritual guide; he exhibited a profound understanding of the world, consistently astonishing everyone with his ingenuity, deep knowledge, and magnificent humility. His wisdom had an indescribable purity that radiated like an ever-flickering, undying lamp. Yet, there existed a secret associated with him that only few acknowledged – an essence of mysticism flowing in his words, an art he had inherited from his forefathers who were believed to be divine beings. The gift was 'The Verses of Eternity'.
Li Wei's verses were not merely words, they were keys that opened gates to unfathomable dimensions. On close observation, one could sense an ethereal aura around the parchments where these verses were inscribed. A powerful mystery, these verses were; they held the power to control time. Their potential was terrifyingly beautiful, a paradox as they could unravel the gifts and curses of eternity.
On a cold winter’s night, under the gaze of a million twinkling stars, a desperate knock echoed through Li Wei’s quarters. He opened the door to find a young woman, Ah Lam, her face damp from the tears streaming down her cheeks. Ah Lam was known for her resilient spirit, so her current state astonished Li.
She was trembling as she begged Li Wei for his assistance. Her husband, Zhu, was a skillful mountaineer who had set off to explore an undiscovered peak, but there had been a tremendous avalanche. Everyone in the village presumed him to be dead, but she refused to accept it. She was ready to give anything to see Zhu once again.
Li Wei felt a deep sympathy for Ah Lam; the love in her tearful eyes ripped at his heart. After much contemplation, he decided to break his vows and use the verses for personal use. He gave Ah Lam a piece of parchment with the time-controlling couplets inscribed delicately on it. With instructions on how to use them, he warned her to strictly use them just once. Otherwise, the cycle of time could be disrupted, manifesting into unimaginable consequences.
Ah Lam was grateful beyond words, and with cautious steps, she used the verses that night. In a blink of an eye, she found herself back in time, standing beside Zhu who was preparing for the trek. She prevented him from embarking on that fatal journey. The joy of having Zhu back, alive, was incomparable. For a while, life returned to being wonderful.
However, as bearer of powerful secrets, human greed often fails them. Ah Lam slowly began abusing the verse's power. She turned back time for trivial benefits, utterly disregarding Li Wei's warning. The unnatural shifts in time did not take much time to bring forth calamity. Illnesses devoid of any medical explanations started spreading; crops failed, and the village plunged into an era of extreme suffering.
Li Wei immediately sensed the misuse of the verses. Heartbroken with remorse, he approached Ah Lam, chastising her for her reckless behavior. Filled with guilt, she realized the grave mistake she had made. But the damage was done, and there was only one way now to cease the ongoing pandemonium.
With no other choice at hand, Li Wei prepared to recite another set of verses – the ones that could erase memories. He knew he had to free Ah Lam and the rest of the village from any knowledge of those verses and the events instigated by them.
He recited them under the gleaming full moon, his voice filled with regret and a smidge of hope. As the moonlight embraced the village, time began to set itself right. The village was healed; people woke up the next morning oblivious of the chaos they had been victims of. Everything was normal. Zhu, however, was not there. Li Wei's verses could only fix the present and the future but couldn’t alter the past. Ah Lam was found grieving, inherently saddened but not understanding why.
The disheartened monk resumed his peaceful existence, vowing never to use the Verses of Eternity again. His lesson served as a grim reminder that time was the universe's sacred rhythm, and any attempt to meddle with it could bear catastrophic results, even with the best intentions at heart.
