The Tale Teller of Brightwood
A long time ago, in the quiet village of Brightwood, surrounded by towering mountains and lush green forests, lived a feeble aged man known to all as Old Fred. He was the most unique character in town, always seen dressed in his cream white coat and black boots, chewing a stick of straw as he wandered aimlessly through the cobbled paths of the village. His face highlighted by age-old wisdom and eyes that sparkled with a thousand untold stories. Though closely tied to the village's history, no one knew much about him. He had been there, like the mountain range, as long as anyone could remember.
One cool Autumn’s evening, when the sun’s burnt orange glow was slowly swallowed by the horizon’s embrace, the villagers gathered around the grand banyan tree, as was the custom, for the annual storytelling event. They eagerly awaited the tales that spun from Old Fred's lips with an enchanting rhythm, sending his audience on an exciting journey. On this special day, Fred stepped forward and began what was to be his most extraordinary tale yet.
He narrated the story of a courageous goat named Billy who, despite his small and weak stature compared to his peers, displayed long lost bravery and intelligence. Billy, the goat, was mocked by the other animals in the farm for his fear of heights. The other goats jumped from rock to rock effortlessly, while Billy remained on the safe meadows, looking up in dread and envy.
One day, a leopard, in broad daylight, made its way into their farm, taking advantage of the absence of humans. The other animals, succumbing to their fear, ran amok to hide. While Billy, bravely, against his natural instinct decided to stand his ground and defend his fellow farm animals.
Despite his trembling legs and thumping heart, using his sharp wits, Billy led the menacing leopard towards a path lined with thorny bushes on both sides. He baited the predator, making the leopard believe that he was an easy prey, but at the last moment, Billy dashed away, leaving the surprised leopard to jump straight into the thorny ambush. Bleeding and hurt, the leopard swiftly fled back to the forests, leaving the farm and the animals unharmed.
The once mocked goat became the hero of the farm overnight, and the animals realised the undeniable strength that lay beneath Billy's fearful exterior. His bravery became an inspiration for all, as they learned that courage doesn't mean lack of fear but acting in spite of it.
As Fred’s words quieted and his story spun to an end, the villagers sat in awe. They clapped and cheered, the eerie silence replaced by laughter and merriment. The tale of the brave goat would be passed down to generations, and, unconsciously, so would Fred's teachings. His stories were not just filled with adventures and laughs but were a source of reflection about one’s fear, strength, courage, and the importance of unity.
Several days later, Fred breathed his last, leaving the village in bereaved silence. However, his tales lived on, his life lessons continued to propagate, his teachings were imparted through his stories and his legacy lasted forever in the spirit and soul of Brightwood. Old Fred, the humble village storyteller, had indeed sown seeds of wisdom, bravery and resilience in the hearts of the villagers, creating an unforgettable footprint in the pages of the village’s history, forever cherishing the times the village was blessed with his presence.
