The Silent Song of the Sea
In an old coastal town named Marispell, nestled in the crook of a meandering river and the expansive ocean, the locals lived in peaceful harmony with the whim of the sea. The Marispell folk were known throughout for their unique connection with the ocean, many theorized that it was the sea that sang the lullabies to the sleeping shells that adorned the town.
The protagonist of our story was a little girl named Selene, a sea child at heart. Selene was born on a tempestuous night; wind writhed in the lanes of Marispell, curling around houses like the sea waves around the pillars of the pier. Her mother, ever so fond of the sea, named her 'Selene', drawn from an ancient tale where the moon dances with the sea. Selene, just like her birth night, was unlike any other child. Her connection with the sea was something that not even the oldest of the Marispell folks possessed. She understood the song of the sea, the hymn of the waves, the melody of the winds, and found comfort in the rhythm of nature.
Years passed and Selene grew into an enchanting child, her affinity to the sea found expression in her deep sea-blue eyes that seemed to shimmer with the sun's kiss. She spent hours by the bay, a string of shells adorning her hair, and a dreamy gaze focussed on the horizon. It seemed like Selene heard symphonies in the monotonous lapping of the waves, found stories in the chaotic crescents created by the wind on the sea surface, something that the sea whispered only to her.
One blustery afternoon, while the town prepared for an approaching storm, Selene disappeared. A frantic search ensued but to no avail. The storm abated but left an aftermath of dread. The townsfolk had lost hope when days later, a spectacle awaited them at the bay. Emerging from the early morning fog was the silhouette of Selene, standing on the shore, her hair blending with the brine-kissed night. Relief swept over Marispell like a soothing sea breeze.
Since that day, Selene changed. She sang. She sang the most beautiful songs known to men. Her melodies painted surreal pictures of kingdoms beneath the sea, dragons breathing fire underwater, sea nymphs dancing around kelp fire, sea monsters saving sailors. It was like listening to the sea and all its secrets but in a language everyone could understand.
As enchanting as her songs were, something amiss gnawed at the townsfolk. The sea, it was silent. The roars had dimmed and the whispers were hushed. The waves moved in muted rhythm, as though reluctantly carrying out a chore.
An old sailor once said, 'The sea cries through the storm, laughs through the waves, and whispers in the breeze. But when it's silent, it's angry or sad. Perhaps even both.' The sailor passed but his words hung about, now clawing their way into the heart of the Marispell people. They realized their exploit, they had taken Selene's gift for granted, silenced the sea to understand it through a medium.
The villagers pleaded to Selene to stop singing. A part of Selene wilted at the thought but the sight of the sorrow-ladened sea pushed her. Selene silenced her song and waited. Gradually, the whispers returned, and the sea roared again. The symphony resumed its old harmony and the villagers re-learned their old ways of understanding the sea.
Months after Selene returned to being a town's child from the Sea's song messenger, she found herself at her familiar spot by the bay. The sun was setting, dousing the world in an orangish hue, when a peculiar shell washed up at the shore. She picked it up, bringing it close to her ear. And just like that, the sea began its tales again. Her eyes lit up as she once again listened to her dear friend, their bond unchanged.
Through Selene's journey, the town learned that nature and its music were meant to be free, not contained within the mortal boundaries of understanding. The sea and its songs were back, and life in the coastal town of Marispell retained its harmony.
The silent song of the sea resumed - a sweet symphony that was best left undisturbed and respectfully uninterpreted. This was an exclusive song that bound Selene to the sea, a friendship that thrived in mutual respect and understanding, a tale meant for the sea and the moon to retell.
