The story begins in 1945 Barcelona, in the heart of a city still bruised from the civil wars. Ten-year-old Daniel Sempere is taken by his father to the mystical Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a labyrinthine library of old and forgotten titles lovingly preserved by a select few. Daniel is allowed to pick any book he likes, and he chooses 'The Shadow of the Wind' by Julian Carax. The book touches Daniel deeply, and he is shocked to discover that all other books by the same author have been destroyed and he now owns the last of Carax's works.
