The Price of Freedom

Once upon a time in the mountainous kingdom of Escalonia, nestled between two opposing empires, lived a watchmaker named Alfred. He was known throughout the city for his meticulous hand that breathed life into lifeless gears and springs, creating exquisite timepieces.
Each timepiece that departed from Alfred's workshop was unique, an epitome of both the man's talent and the recipient's personality. In this kingdom where time force-fed the inevitability of allegiance to empires, these pocket watches were much more than just instruments of time. They were symbols of free will, of Escalonian resistance.
Despite their precarious situation, people of Escalonia revelled in their cherished neutrality, a heritage handed down by their ancestors. And Alfred, with his timeless creations, nurtured this spirit of independent identity.
One cold winter day, a stranger wrapped in an inscrutable cloak and a finely tailored suit visited Alfred. 'I have heard a lot about your work, watchmaker,' he said in a deep smooth voice, emanating power and control. The stranger introduced himself as the Envoy, a representative of the Northern Empire.
The Envoy proposed a deal. If Alfred could customize a grand watch symbolizing the might of the Northern Empire, he would reward him with unimaginable riches and even protection from both the empires. However, an unspoken ultimatum hung in air - declining this 'offer' might invite the northern wrath upon Escalonia.
The next morning found Alfred staring at a blank sheet of paper but whenever his pencil tip touched the paper, it only caught the silhouette of freedom, not the might of the empire. Alfred was torn between his heart, which throbbed in Escalonian freedom, and the survival prospects of his city.
Alfred decided to approach the wise old sage Meldrik, hidden deep in the heart of the Whispering Woods. Alfred embarked on this perilous journey with hope in his heart, and his feet finding solace in the crunching snow beneath them.
'A watch that speaks of might will instigate the other empire, and then war is inevitable, Alfred. But a watch that portrays peace might calm this chaos,' Meldrik suggested after listening to Alfred's predicament. A soft smile crinkled across Meldrik's aged face, spreading a cozy warmth in Alfred's heart.
Thus, Alfred began working feverishly, losing track of both time and fatigue. His workshop became a fighting arena where the weapons of creativity fought with the nightmares of an impending war.
After days of tireless work, a masterpiece was born. A pocket watch that boasted the grandeur of the Northern Empire but harbored symbols of peace and harmony within: A roaring northern lion and a tranquil southern white dove, encapsulated in time, yet transcending its boundaries.
The Envoy returned on the promised date. His eyes sparkled with an unquenchable thirst as he held Alfred's creation. But upon unveiling the carefully crafted peace symbols in the watch, his face darkened. Alfred stood his ground, defended his creation elucidating Meldrik's wise words. The Envoy left silently, his expression unreadable.
In the following days, the feared war didn't touch Escalonia. The Northern Empire acknowledged the peace message sent through the watch. The Southern Empire, inspired by this gesture, decided to respect the neutrality of Escalonia.
Alfred, the humble watchmaker, through his art and fortitude, had single-handedly preserved the neutrality and tranquility of his kingdom. His story spread across neighbouring regions as folklore, inspiring generations to come that even in the bristling demands of might, the seed of peace can find its place, if planted with faith.
Alfred’s story is a reminder that troubled times call for wisdom, not strength. Instead of bowing to the fears of destruction, an embrace of peace can not only save but nurture the quality that every creation thrives for – Freedom.
