The Man Behind The Shadows

In the heart of the bustling city of New York, there lived a man named Oscar Peterson, a man known and feared by most as a man behind the shadows. Unknown to many, Oscar lived a dual life - a life of anonymity during the day and power and control at night.
During the day, Oscar was simply a man existing in the mediocrity and mundanity of everyday life. As a janitor in George Washington High School, Oscar made a living by cleaning hallways, markers around classrooms, and mopping the gymnasium floor. He was well-respected for his diligence, although mostly unnoticed. The students greeted him occasionally, never expecting the man scrubbing away their shoeprints held enormous power when the sun went down.
However, as soon as the last crimson rays of the setting sun faded, and the blanket of darkness descended, the timid Oscar transformed into 'The Phantom,' a man of significant stature in the shadowy underworld of New York City. He was the puppeteer who pulled at the strings, kept the balance in check, and made sure that everything in his dominion worked as per his commands.
Everything was running smoothly until one morning, when Oscar accidentally stumbled upon an anonymous note pinned to his locker. It read, 'I know who you are.' The handwriting bore no familiarity, and no further information followed. Unsettled and anxious, Oscar found himself gazing over his shoulder more often, his eyes darting to shadows more frequently. His masquerade during the day, hiding his true identity, suddenly seemed feeble. The boundaries that separated his two worlds were beginning to blur.
Paranoia threatened to consume Oscar, provoking him to delve deeper to unmask the mystery bearer of his secret. He started applying his underworld skills to his daylight world. Carefully observing students and staff, using small talk to glean any scraps of suspicious conversation, his janitor job suddenly became the perfect cover for his investigation.
After weeks of careful scrutiny, he zeroed in on Melissa, a quiet and introverted eleventh grader. He noticed her keeps stealing glances at him and scribbling down in her notebook. Assuming she was the threat, one day, Oscar decided to confront her. He cornered her in the library and snatched her notebook, flipping through it quickly only to find sketches of him and a story about a janitor who led a secret life as a powerful underworld crime lord.
As it turned out, Melissa was writing a fiction novel using Oscar as her muse because she found his mundane life intriguing. She had seen Oscar’s eyes, the way they always seemed to hold untold stories, and created a character for her book modeled after him. To say the least, she was oblivious to Oscar's secret life. But the coincidental accuracy of her story stunned Oscar, reinforcing the old adage that fact is stranger than fiction.
For a moment, Oscar contemplated revealing his true identity to Melissa, who seemed to have unconsciously created a perfect mirror image of him. Still, he realized that his secret was not discovered; it was merely an uncanny coincidence. Melissa’s fictional hero would remain fictional while Oscar would continue reigning the dark underworld.
From then on, Oscar moved about the high school corridors not just as a silent observer but also as a character in a novel, unknown to the multitude, known to one. His mundane job became a little more exciting and risky, just like his secret-every night professional life.
Oscar Peterson learnt that even the man behind the shadows can cast a long shadow in the most unexpected places; it doesn't need to be in the dark, dangerous streets of New York's underbelly, but in the bright, quiet corners of a high school library.
