The Maiden of Verona
In a small village known as Verona apparently secluded from the world's harsh realities, lived a humble carpenter named Giovanni. Giovanni was ordinary at the first sight but secretly possessed a magical gift, the ability to breathe life into his creations.
One day, in the heart of winter, the village mayor commissioned him to carve a statue for the village square. Understanding the importance of this project, Giovanni decided to create something magnificent.
So, he carefully selected a flawless tree in the forest and took it home. He spent countless hours in his humble workshop, pouring heart, soul, and magic into his creation, a beautiful statue of a maiden holding a robin in her hands.
As he worked through the long winter, he noticed the statue started to manifest a distinctive aura, a sign his magic was actualizing. On the night he finished the carving, a spectacular phenomenon occurred. The maiden breathed her first breath, her stone gray eyes flashed open, and shifted to a vibrant blue. His beautiful wooden maiden, whom he named Seraphina, came to life.
Seraphina was gentle and curious. She spent her days helping Giovanni in his workshop and learning about life in Verona. However, the villagers were oblivious to her mystical origin. So to them, she was just a strange, silent girl who appeared out of nowhere.
As time passed, Seraphina gained affection not only for Giovanni's kindness but also for their shared love of creation. Meanwhile, the villagers grew increasingly fond of Seraphina’s beauty and gentleness.
One day, an aristocrat from a nearby city visited Verona. Upon seeing Seraphina, he was instantly smitten by her beauty. Not knowing her secret, he proposed marriage, wishing to take her back to the city. Torn between her newfound feelings for Giovanni and this proposal, Seraphina sought her creator's counsel.
Giovanni loved Seraphina like one loves their own child and was also acutely aware of his advancing age. He wanted nothing but happiness for Seraphina and thus, he told her to choose what her heart desired.
Touched by his selflessness, Seraphina finally realized her feelings were far beyond platonic affection. She made her choice, not as a statue or a forced bride, but as a woman in love. She declined the aristocrat’s proposal and confessed her love for Giovanni.
The villagers were startled when Seraphina uttered her first words in public, 'I am a maiden brought to life only to learn, to create and to love. I may have been Giovanni’s creation, but I am not his possession. I am my own, and this day, I choose to live out my days with him.'
Their story spread like wildfire, reaching even the neighboring cities. The people shared stories of the living statue and her love for her creator. Seraphina's story taught them the importance of freedom, love, and authenticity.
Giovanni and Seraphina continued to live in their quaint village of Verona, aging together, and cherishing each other's company. The wooden maiden was not only Giovanni’s best creation but also the love of his life.
Even today, in Verona, a beautiful wooden maiden stands holding a robin. It was Giovanni's last creation, an homage to their extraordinary love story. Remaining forever as a symbol of a carpenter’s love and miracle, the statue serves as a living testament to the magic of Verona's endearing love story.
