The Legend of the Amber Eyes
In the heart of the mysterious and lush Belgian forest, a small, forgotten village called Dourbes held an ancient secret - the legend of the Amber Eyes.
The tale dates back to the time of the crusaders when Dourbes was a bustling settlement. A baby boy was born one night, under a moonless sky. He was named Lucien, and his eyes, the color of clear amber, mesmerized all. His elder brother, Emile, though ordinary in appearance, was remarkable for his extraordinary courage and unwavering loyalty. The boys grew up, embodying their distinctive traits.
When the crusades began, Emile joined leaving Lucien and their aging mother. Emile promised to return once the crusades ended, but fate had other plans. News of Emile's death reached Dourbes, devastating Lucien and his mother. As the village suffered in his brother's loss, Lucien's amber eyes started to exhibit strange powers. He could foresee catastrophes before they happened, helping the villagers avoid numerous calamities. Though deemed a blessing, Lucien felt the burden. His amber eyes concealed a curse - the agony of experiencing each disaster before it occurred.
Years slipped away, and Lucien made peace with his fate. One day, while wandering in the forest, he saw a peculiar light. It led him to an ancient sculpture with two hollows - a perfect fit for Lucien’s eyes. Overcome by curiosity and an uncanny sense of belonging, he positioned his amber eyes into the hollows. A blinding light enveloped him and he heard Emile’s voice, 'I was always brave because of you, brother.'
When Lucien awoke, he was back home, relieved his amber eyes were void of the curse. But there was a difference – his eyes were now ordinary. The village soon forgot the amber-eyed seer. Lucien, living in anonymity, realized that the sculpture had born the curse to save humanity.
The Sculpture of the Amber Eyes was henceforth regarded as a holy guardian by the believers, while skeptics considered it a mere piece of ancient art. It stood the test of time, witnessing the rise and fall of civilizations, preserving the secret of the Amber Eyes.
As if destiny had yet another twist, centuries later, a doe-eyed lass named Eleanor arrived in Dourbes. The villagers noticed her unique amber-colored eyes and deliberated about the ancient legend. Old-timers warned her, but the young and curious Eleanor had been bewitched by the lore. The statue silently awaited this visitor in the forest.
One evening, Eleanor ventured into the forest and was inexorably drawn towards the statue. Her heart pounded as she approached. She slowly placed her beautiful amber eyes into the hollows, and a light engulfed her.
Eleanor expected a prophecy of doom, or to foresee disasters, but all she heard was Lucien's voice, 'Fear not, for you carry the gift of foresight, and the courage to face it.' With that, she awoke under the statue, her amber eyes brimming with courage and clarity.
Returning to the village, Eleanor found it on the brink of an irreparable disaster. A contingent of pillagers was advancing towards their home. Towered with courage and the recent secret of foreseen, Eleanor led her people to safety.
Relieved, she understood her part in the legend. Not all amber eyes were cursed, some carried the gift of bravery. And as per the tale of brotherhood, courage, and foresight, Dourbes thrived under the protection of Eleanor's amber eyes.
The legend of the Amber Eyes became a folklore of Dourbes - narrated to generations, and borne by the Forest's secret guardian. And just as Lucien and Eleanor, the chosen ones continued to appear every few centuries, their amber eyes holding the village's destiny.
