The Last Whisper of the Ancient Oak
Once upon a time, in a kingdom faraway, nestled in the lap of colossal, ice-laden mountains, lay the quaint town of Keldor. Keldor was known far and wide, not for its location or its residents, but for a tree, an ancient Oak that had been there since time immemorial. An Oak so magnificent, that its glistening branches, laden with the purest leaves, seemed to touch the sky, forming an intricate dance of nature. They called it, the 'Solstice Oak'.
The Solstice Oak had very peculiar attributes. It was said that the tree held the power to grant any wish. However, there was a catch. A wish could only be granted if requested on the eve of Winter Solstice, in a whisper so faint that the request would barely touch the tree’s bark. The tree would then evaluate if you were truthful, and if so, it would grant the wish. This made Solstice Oak the beacon of hope and anticipation every winter.
One winter, a humble shoemaker, Roth, decided that he would take a chance. He was living a life of immense hardship. Trying to make ends meet, he toiled day and night, but luck did not favor him. With the hope of a better future, he decided to make a wish under the Solstice Oak. Given his hardship, he wanted wealth, but he also knew from stories that the Oak was wise. It wouldn't grant the wish if it was only for personal gain
The day of the Winter Solstice finally arrived. The town was still and silent, the footsteps of the villagers muffled by the fresh blanket of snow. Roth approached the Solstice Oak, feeling an aura of nervous excitement around the tree. He touched the bark and whispered, 'I request for prosperity, not just for me, but for every villager in Keldor. I want us, the residents of Keldor, to thrive.' His request was selfless, despite his hardships.
The following day, Roth woke up to find a small pouch tied to his door. It was full of gold coins, enough to solve his financial troubles. That was not all though, throughout Keldor, each villager woke up to a similar pouch. The Solstice Oak had granted Roth's wish. Elated, the villagers celebrated their fortune, thanking the Solstice Oak for its benevolence.
Years went by, and Keldor prospered. Crops failed no more, the weather was kinder, and the village produced luxury goods that brought prosperity. Roth, too, flourished. He became a respected merchant who gave people jobs, granted loans, and continued making comfortable shoes. The Solstice Oak had changed their world, and the people of Keldor lived happily.
However, after a century of granting wishes, the Solstice Oak’s gloss started to wane. Its branches began to thin out, its leaves turned amber, and the wishes started going unanswered. It finally dawned upon the villagers that the Solstice Oak was dying. It had perhaps fulfilled one wish too many and it was time for it to rest.
The night the Solstice Oak took its last breath was the darkest in the history of Keldor. The villagers mourned, reminisced of the golden days, and then finally remembered the goodness it had brought to their lives. The next morning, where the once majestic Solstice Oak had stood, was a sturdy sapling, silently promising of life and new beginnings.
The villagers felt a pang of sadness but of hope too. The sapling was a part of the Solstice Oak, a symbol of its soul, forever rooted in the heart of Keldor. Their hearts filled with gratitude, the villagers decided to protect and nurture the sapling, knowing well that time was a cruel and contrastingly kind master.
The story of the Solstice Oak, with its waning whispers, lived on, passed down through the generations. It served as a constant reminder to the villagers about the cycle of life, gratitude, and the power of selfless giving.
