The Last Portal
In the heart of a bustling city that merges the past and the present, there lay a quiet neighborhood known as 'Rivendell Lane.' This low-key locale was home to seemingly ordinary people, living ordinary lives... or so it would have seemed to the untrained eye.
William, a local antique bookseller resided in a corner house, adorned quaintly with blooming roses. Behind the facade of his age and typical lifestyle, hid a tenebrous yet magical secret. He was the guardian of the last existing portal to a contrasting world, a world – impossible to fathom by human science or adventuring human explorers.
The existence of this portal had been William's family secret for generations. Coming from a long line of guardians, the duty now fell onto his old, withering shoulders. This other world, known as 'Erridanos,' was inhabited by extraordinary beings with advanced knowledge and mysticism.
Without the conscientious oversight of the guardians, Erridanos could pose a threat to Earth due to any unchecked exchanges of knowledge and novelties. Equally, the earth's consumption-based society could endanger Erridanos with its nostalgic beauty and untouched resources.
One night, a disturbance, an eerie glow around the edges of the portal in his basement, indicated that something was wrong. As William headed towards the basement, his heart pounded with dread. The glow was overpowering, casting long, haunting shadows around the room.
Upon reaching the portal, he gasped. It was unstable, flickering like a faulty bulb. He knew the implications immediately. If the portal disconnected, then earth would lose access to undreamt wisdom while Erridanos might undergo radical disruption. He thought about his apprentice, young and enthusiastic Oliver. Despite being inexperienced, Oliver was the only help he had.
He picked up the 'Crystal of Kieros,' the ancient tool meant for strengthening the portal connection. He imbued it with his intention and energy, a mystical process taught by his ancestors. However, the portal continued to flicker, the glow pulsating wildly. With panic set in his heart, he summoned Oliver through a raven with a message tied to its claws as per the old ways.
Oliver arrived within the hour, breathless and wide-eyed. William explained him the situation. The grim seriousness of it sunk in Oliver's heart. He had heard tales of the portal's vulnerability, but the reality was scarier. However, he was prepared to do his best for the sake of both worlds. The duo worked night and day, utilizing every bit of knowledge handed down through generations.
Despite numerous attempts, the portal remained wavering. The guardians felt a dreadful sense of failure taking root in their hearts. Just when they were losing hope, Oliver remembered a forgotten lore, a last-ditch ritual that could stabilize the portal but at a great cost - leaving Erridanos isolated from the earth forever. The decision was heart-wrenching, but with the alternative being cataclysmic, they chose to perform the ritual.
As they started the spell, the air around them hummed with pulsating energy. The glow from the portal grew so bright that they had to shield their eyes. Suddenly, with a blinding flash and a low rumble, the portal flickered one last time before shutting forever.
Upon opening their eyes, they found the room silent, bathed in mundane darkness. It was done. Though saddened by the loss, a sense of relief washed over them. They had saved both worlds from an imminent disaster.
From then on, Rivendell Lane fell back to its usual quiet self. The house at the corner appeared to be just another old, yet charming dwelling. William continued to run his antique bookstore, while Oliver became his apprentice in guardian lore, with the hope that one day, they might find a way to open the portal again. They were the unsung heroes, being the bridge between two worlds and then the protectors of their solitude.
Till then, they knew they still had a gigantic responsibility - to keep the secret of the portal and to protect the legacy of their ancestors while ensuring the safety and serenity of two worlds.
