The Last Page

In the far corners of the obscure town of Lamenta, there existed a bookstore that housed boundless tales from around the world. Its owner, a refined and scholarly man named Mr. Altair, loved nothing more than these bound collections of thoughts and narratives. His deep-set eyes held the spark of countless tales he had made part of his being. But there was a mystery shrouding Mr. Altair, for he was not only a collector of stories but a keeper of secrets as well.
One gloomy afternoon, a young man, Neil, nearly twenty-two, entered Mr. Altair's bookstore. Bright-eyed and eager, he explored the troves of wisdom and creativity the bookstore harbored. As he meandered around, a particularly vintage-looking book on the highest shelf caught his eye. To his disappointment, however, he realized that the book was missing its last page.
Neil approached Mr. Altair and mentioned the incomplete book, only to be met with a knowing smile from the elderly man. 'You've found it, haven't you?' He mused, his gaze landing on the book in Neil’s hand. ‘The book with the last page missing. It's not incomplete, my boy, it's merely awaiting its end.’
Struck by curiosity, Neil decided to buy the book and found himself so drawn to the story that he spent the entire night reading it. It was a tale of a knight whose mission was to reclaim his kingdom from an evil sorcerer. But the story abruptly ended as the knight began his final battle – with the last page missing.
Next day, Neil went back to Mr. Altair to inquire about the ending. The old man, with a gleam in his eyes, shared his secret. 'Every person who reads this book sees a different ending. Its real charm lies not in its words, but in its reader's imagination.'
Excited by the mystery, Neil re-read the book multiple times, each time conjuring a new fate for the knight. At times the knight emerged victorious, while at others he sacrificed himself for his kingdom. Neil wrote his imagined endings and shared them with Mr. Altair, who listened to each with deep interest.
As the weeks turned to months, Neil’s relationship with the book and Mr. Altair deepened. One day, when he had written an ending particularly close to his heart, he shared it with the old man once more. He imagined the knight making peace with the sorcerer and building a united kingdom. After hearing the story, Mr. Altair had a twinkle in his eyes. ‘That, my boy, is the ending this book was always waiting for.’
Moved by the narrative, Mr. Altair decided to officially end the story with Neil's ending. He invited Neil to write it on a piece of parchment, which he then lovingly added to the book’s final binding. The book which once lay incomplete saw its ending through the imaginative lens of a young reader.
While the book found its last page, Neil uncovered his love for storytelling. He left Lamenta a few years later to chase his dream of becoming a writer, carrying with him the gift of imagination and the wisdom that every reader could be a writer rendering new endings to stories.
As for Mr. Altair, though he had lost a faithful visitor to his bookstore, he had gained a book that was now truly complete. His belief in collective imagination stood validated, proving once again that stories, just like people, could evolve and find their purpose in the most unexpected places.
Thus, the old bookstore in Lamenta remained not merely a house of countless books but also a keep of secrets, stories and dreams, waiting for yet another reader to discover a new story that was waiting for an ending.
