The Last Hope of Aridia
The wind howled across the barren landscapes of Aridia, a planet ironically named after the Earth goddess of harvest and fertility. No harvest or fertility graced these dead soils though. Their only yield was dust and the planet’s inhabitants, the Aridians, lived in despair.
Their leader, an old and wearied man named Odhran, carried the weight of his people's sufferings heavily on his shoulders. The Aridians were a resilient race, stoic despite the hopelessness that engulfed them. Yet, Odhran knew that without water, they were staring extinction in the eyes.
Then, one stargazing night, Odhran sighted a mystic blue sphere, the planet Earth nestled on the far edge of the galaxy. Legend spoke of a miraculous liquid called 'water' that breed life extensively there. Despite the risks, with hope ignited, Odhran made the decision to journey across the interstellar divide in search of this life-giving water.
Equipped with the ancient spacecraft Helios, once the glorious vessel of Aridian explorers of the past, and accompanied by his determined granddaughter Arya, Odhran embarked on the desperate journey. Their space route was littered with dangerous asteroids, harsh meteor showers, deterring black holes and the crushing weight of solitude. Many times, they skirted the edge of disaster but every time, drawing strength from each other and their daunting mission, they persevered.
Amid this dire struggle, Arya bonded with her grandfather over stories of Aridia's glorious past, filled with grandiose cities, abundant greenery and water bodies. Through her vivid imagination, she saw Aridia not as a dust-ridden grave it had become but the fertile paradise it was once.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, their worn-out vessel approached earth. Encased in their Aridian space suits, Odhran and Arya stepped onto the blue-planet and found themselves in a forest, spectacular and abundant with life. Every lifeform they encountered was new, beautiful and simply alive. It was a sharp contrast to the desolate Aridia they had left behind. They collected water samples and Arya filled her soul with the sight of the vibrant Earth.
However, the Earth seemed to be at odds with its own inhabitants. Humans exploited their resources endlessly, taking more from the Earth than it could replenish. Odhran and Arya witnessed pollution, deforestation, and more devastatingly, the drying up rivers. It seemed the 'homo-sapiens' were on the path to make their blue realm as barren as Aridia.
With a heavy heart but a renewed spirit, Odhran and Arya bid goodbye to the Earth and its oblivious occupants, their spacecraft carrying a much-needed hope for Aridia.
The journey back was as dangerous as their expedition but they fought through everything, seeming more determined than ever. Upon their return, Odhran and Arya were greeted with joyous cheer. Though their bodies were fatigued, their spirits were uplifted by the glimmer of hope reflecting in every Aridian eye.
The water from the Earth reacted positively with the Aridian soil and skies. Slowly, over months, patches of green started appearing and life began to stir in the silent planet. The memory of Earth, however, served as a grim reminder of the fragility of life.
From then on, the Aridians lived valuing every single drop of water, the last hope of Aridia. Arya, having inherited her grandfather's will, became the beacon of hope for her people and guide them towards a sustainable future. With lessons learned, they promised to not repeat the mistakes of humans, the seemingly lonely inhabitants of the blue planet. Happy, healthy and hopeful, the Aridians began rebirth from their ash-like existence, all thanks to their brave leader Odhran and the determined Arya.
