The Last Feather
In the town of Ark, nestled among the Emerald Mountains, where people lived in harmony with nature, lived a young boy named Ethan. The villagers said that he had a magic touch that could breathe life into everything he touched.
Every day after chores, Ethan would go into the woods, his refuge from the outer world. One sunny afternoon, an unusual thing happened. Ethan encountered a creature unlike he ever met before, a radiant bird with feathers glistening in multiple colors. But the bird seemed injured with a broken wing. Ethan couldn’t leave the bird alone. Ethan gently picked it up and took it home to nurse it back to health.
Over the weeks, the bird started recovering under Ethan's tender care. It was then, the radiant bird revealed its secret. It was actually a mythical bird, Ikarus, the last of the Phoenix species. It had gone into hiding after warlocks hunted for Phoenixes, for the immortality their feathers offered. Ikarus gave Ethan one of its radiant feathers as a sign of eternal friendship and made him promise that he would keep it a secret.
One day, Ethan’s mother fell seriously ill. The town’s doctor seemed helpless. Ethan watched his mother withering away with a sinking heart. Remembering Ikarus’s feather might help, he hesitated. Breaking the promise might betray his friend. But wasn't it for a good cause?
Summoning all his courage, Ethan took out the radiant feather. The feather pulsated with the warmth of life. He waved it gently over his mother. A blinding, golden light enveloped the room, growing brighter every second, and then it vanished as suddenly as it appeared, leaving behind a sparkly dust. Calvin opened his eyes slowly, there, in front of his eyes, lay his mother, breathing normally, revived and rejuvenated.
When Ikarus found out about this, he was dismayed. However, seeing the desperation of Ethan and his love for his mother made Ikarus understand. Instead of condemnation, Ikarus forgave Ethan. But he explained to Ethan about the balance of nature and the cost of using such a power. When something is given life, something else might lose theirs.
Soon after, Ikarus was found silent and still. Ethan rushed towards him, tears blurring his vision. Realization dawned upon him. Ikarus gave his life for Ethan’s mother. With a sore heart, he understood the sacrifice of his friend and also the cost of immortality.
He held the Phoenix close, whispering a sorrowful goodbye. Suddenly, the feather that brought his mother back to life started glowing again. It got brighter and brighter, enveloping Ikarus. When the light faded away, Ikarus was no more. In its place was a little egg, shimmering with the colors of hope, loss, love, and a new beginning.
And then, the last thing that Ikarus had gifted him, the radiant feather turned into dust. Now he was left with an emblem of Ikarus's sacrifice, a glowing egg, pulsating with the warmth of life, the last of the Phoenix species.
Ethan, enlightened by his friend's ultimate sacrifice, decided the egg would be the secret he would keep this time. He would guard it until the right time, the time for a Phoenix’s rebirth, a symbol of hope that in the cycle of life, death was not the end. Ethan learned a valuable lesson about life's cycle, the balance of nature, and that immortality came with a price.
From that day onwards, he took an oath to protect the essence of life without disturbing nature's law. The tale of the Last Feather became a lore in the town of Ark, a story not of immortality, but a story of life, sacrifice, friendship, and most importantly, a tale about the sacred balance of life.
