The Courage of Edgar
In the small village of Yorlay, nestled between the mighty mountains of Arden and the vast blue sea, lived an ancient woman named Matilda. She was a peculiar woman with stories as old as time, and even though she lived on the outskirts of the town, the villagers revered her.
One day when the golden rays of sun were kissing the mountain peaks, a young boy named Edgar appeared on Matilda's doorstep. Edgar was the son of the village chief and was known for his bravery and wit. He had heard stories of Matilda's wisdom and wanted to learn the ways of courage under her guidance.
Matilda, with her ancient wisdom, sensed the burning desire within Edgar. However, she knew that true courage wasn't merely about wielding a sword or confronting a beast; it was far more. It was about resilience, perseverance, and above all, kindness. Thus, began the most extraordinary journey of imparting true courage.
Instead of training him to swing a sword or shoot an arrow, Matilda gave Edgar an old, rusting spade and showed him a land where nothing had grown for years. She asked him to tend to this barren land till it blossomed. Edgar found it bizarre but knew better than to doubt Matilda.
Months went by, Edgar toiled day and night. Matilda watched silently as Edgar labored: he dug the earth, planted seeds, watered them, sheltered them. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and slowly, under Edgar’s ministrations, the barren land started to show signs of life. Tiny green buds started to push through the dirt, reaching out towards the sun.
Meanwhile, the people in the village heard of Edgar's missions and laughed. They thought he had gone mad under the old lady's guidance. Edgar became the subject of ridicule, but brave as he was, he didn't let their taunts deter him.
The ridicule only hardened Edgar's resolve. However, one day, he broke down in front of Matilda and cried, 'Why must I continue while they mock me?'
Matilda answered, 'Fear not what others say, dear boy. They are unable to comprehend your courage. You're on the right path. Progress isn't seen, it's felt.'
Encouraged, Edgar continued with his mission. And finally, after grueling months, the once barren land became a beautiful garden. Vibrant roses, wild daisies, tulips, and lilies adorned the garden, and fruits hung heavily from every tree.
Seeing this transformation, the villagers were taken aback. Edgar, who they thought had gone mad, had turned a lifeless piece of land into a piece of paradise. The lush garden, standing proudly amidst their mockery, was a testament to Edgar's courage, resilience and patience. Through this journey, Edgar had not only learned the true meaning of courage but also emerged as an inspiration to many.
When the day came for him to leave, Edgar thanked Matilda. He had not learned to wield a sword or lead a battle, but he had learned something far greater. He had learned that courage was not about power but patience. That it was about bearing ridicule, staying firm on the righteous path, and emerging triumphantly against all odds.
And so it was, under the guidance of a wise old woman, in a small village nestled between mountains and the sea, that a young man found the true meaning of courage.
