The Clock of Time
Once upon a time, in the quaint town of Avondale, lived an eccentric yet charming inventor named Theodore. Theodore was popular amongst the townsfolk for his bizarre inventions which, though rarely practical, never failed to bring a smile on everyone's face. From a colander that could sauté vegetables to a teapot that could predict the weather, Theodore's creations were nothing short of whimsical. However, no one knew about Theodore's most ambitious project yet - a time-traveling clock.
For years, Theodore toiled in his secluded workshop, lost in his intricate blueprints and calculations. His obsession with his work began to take a toll on him. He became a recluse, seldom going out or interacting with others. His once vibrant blue eyes, now had a gloomy look, hinting at the intense pressure he was experiencing. His dream of creating a functioning time-traveling clock consumed him.
One exhaustive night, Theodore finally put together the last piece of his invention. As he wound up the clock-hand, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The next moment, however, the room was engulfed in a bright glow. The world outside the workshop seemed to reset itself, turning from night to day, summer to winter, until he found himself standing in front of a five year younger version of himself.
Staring at his reflection from a simpler time, Theodore felt a mix of emotions. He was proud for making the impossible possible but tormented by the possible consequences of playing with the fabric of time. He decided to reveal his invention only to his younger-self.
However, young Theodore had an entirely different outlook towards the invention. Seeing a chance to prevent the town's impending financial crisis, he pledged to use the clock to go five years ahead, gain information and then come back to protect the town. Despite older Theodore's pleas against disturbing the natural order, young Theodore moved forward with his plan.
As he travelled to the future, he saw the aftermath of the crisis. Businesses were closing, homes were abandoned, and the once lively town was now eerily silent. He quickly gathered the necessary information and returned to his original timeline. However, he felt the burden of the knowledge. He worked tirelessly towards protecting the town, losing his jovial nature, becoming more and more like the older Theodore.
Time passed, and his actions started to yield results - the town was saved from the crisis. Yet, the cost was hefty. Young Theodore realised that while he saved the town, he lost himself in the process. He lacked the gleaming spark that once defined him. His attempts to prepare himself for the future stopped him from living his present.
One day, older Theodore returned. They sat together, silently acknowledging the lesson they learned. They decided to tamper with history one last time, to undo their actions. They travelled back to the time just before young Theodore used the clock. They warned him about the toll it would take on his life. Young Theodore agreed to destroy the clock right after they left.
The cycle was broken. Young Theodore still became an eccentric inventor, but he lived his life, unburdened by the need to control the future. He focused instead on igniting joy within his beloved town with his colourful, bizarre inventions. Looking back, it was evident to him that time was a dimension best experienced linearly. No matter the trials and tribulations, every moment had a purpose, an importance in the grand canvas of life. He realised that some clocks were meant to just tell the time.
