The City of Lost Songs
Once, in a world not too different from ours, lay a city consumed by silence, aptly named The City of Lost Songs. Music wasn't banned; instead, it had vanished inexplicably, swept under the carpet of time and forgotten. People of the city, known as the Silents, had lost their capacity to appreciate or create music and lived drearily.
Ramona, a young, vibrant woman, lived at the outskirts of this city. Unlike the Silents, she was born with the gift of music. She could sit for hours, relishing the distant chirping of birds and the rustle of leaves swaying to the wind's tune. She could hear melodies where others heard monotony. By some cosmic jest, she was born in the City of Lost Songs, where her gift was useless because no one could understand her melodies.
One day, a traveler, Alonso, wandered into the city. He was a musician who had heard tales of this city devoid of music. Inspired by the challenge, he decided to attempt bringing songs back to the dreary world of the Silents.
The difference when Alonso and Ramona met was tangible. It wasn't the spark of love that ignited when their eyes met. It was the unforgettable splash of color in a world of greyscale, the clash of two universes that compelled them towards each other.
Alonso was stupefied when he discovered Ramona's ability, as she was the only person who could appreciate his music. Stirred by the unusual pair's harmony, the Silents were reminded of an unfamiliar sensation deep down. They were curious, and curiosity, they say, is the first step towards discovery.
Meanwhile, Ramona and Alonso started creating the most beautiful symphonies that enthralled the birds and swayed the countless trees. But the Silents still stood, desensitized. But the duo didn't lose heart.
They organized a grand concert, inviting everyone from the city. It was a magical night, with gleaming fireflies illuminating the night sky and an uncertain excitement hanging in the air. As Alonso played his guitar, Ramona started singing. Her voice, pure and soulful, cut through the silent dark, reaching out to every corner of the city. The Silents listened, bewitched, poised on the edge of an invisible precipice.
The music consumed Ramona and Alonso, their spirits reaching out to the Silents, pleading to the Forgotten within them. A gentle hum started, softly at first, and then growing stronger. The Silent's faces, monotonous for years, showed the tiniest flicker of emotion as they swayed with the rhythm. The city, once characterized by its stillness, resonated with harmonious voices.
As the concert ended, the night sky broke into dawn, bathing the City of Lost Songs in a new light. The city had found its forgotten voice, and music's magic returned to grace the once silent world. The city was silent no more as from that day onwards music filled the air. The once monotonous life was replaced by melodious giggles, harmonious shouts and symphonic whispers.
Ramona and Alonso had defied the inevitable, combatting silence with harmony and spreading their love for music. The joy of music returned, thus; not taking over silence, instead, living harmoniously alongside it. From that day forth, the City of Lost Songs was just a metaphor. For music had found its way back to the city once more.
