The Apprentice of Time
Once upon a time, in the secluded village of Hickory, there lived an eccentric old man named Eliot. A gifted watchmaker, Eliot was known for his unmatched talent in creating and repairing intricate and exceptional timepieces. Although seen as peculiar by some villagers, Eliot held a peculiar charm. His solitary existence concealed an intimate secret, for Eliot was not just a watchmaker; he was a Custodian of Time.
Living with him was a young boy named Francis who, unlike most boys his age, fancied clocks more than playing games or acquiring new skills. Marginalized by the children of Hickory for his unusual passion, Francis found solace and friendship in Eliot.
One fateful day, while rummaging through Eliot's storeroom, Francis discovered a luxurious and unusual timepiece emitting an ethereal radiance. Unlike any timepiece he ever laid his eyes on, this clock had thirteen hours instead of twelve. Baffled, he took the timepiece to Eliot.
Seeing the thirteen-hour clock in the hands of Francis, Eliot sighed and admitted his true identity as a Custodian of Time. He explained that the timepiece was a Time-Keeper, a device that kept the balance of time across all dimensions. Eliot further conveyed that for many centuries, his ancestors were entrusted with safeguarding time.
Seeing the enthusiasm in the boy's eyes, Eliot decided to share the subtle art of time-keeping with Francis, making him his apprentice. The peculiar sweet old man began training the young boy, entailing stressful hours, precision, devotion, and immense concentration. Francis toiled day and night, motivated by his reverence for Eliot, and his dedication to maintaining the integrity of time.
Their routine continued for years, under the precious teachings of Eliot. But, the serene calm of Hickory was soon disrupted. Sinister forces from a parallel dimension yearned for the Time-Keeper, hoping to nip the threads of time and create a universe adhering to their malevolent intentions.
One night, they succeeded in creating a vortex connecting their dimension with Hickory. Their abrupt invasion took the villagers by surprise. They wreaked havoc in search of the Time-Keeper, eventually discovering Eliot's abode. Overwhelmed by their strength and number, the village was left powerless. The invaders pushed past the villagers, reaching Eliot and Francis, who were making a last-ditch effort to secure the Time-Keeper. The malicious beings were so close to achieving their goal when Francis, driven by his dedication, stepped forward.
Using his newfound skills, he manipulated the Time-Keeper, pulling everyone into a time loop. The daily life of Hickory kept repeating itself as if the invasion had never happened. Still, Francis knew this was only a temporary solution; a permanent one was way above his skills.
Despite his looming death, Eliot was proud of his protege. He used the last of his strength to impart the ultimate knowledge of The Time-Keeper to Francis, freeing Hickory from the loop. The invaders were thrust back into their dimension, the vortex was sealed, and time in Hickory remained untampered.
After Eliot’s tragic demise, Francis stepped into his master’s role, becoming the new Custodian of Time. He devoted his life to safeguarding the Time-Keeper and maintaining the precarious balance of time, living up to Eliot’s expectations.
In Hickory, the legend of the old watchmaker and his brave apprentice is still told, generation after generation. The villagers remember the thirteen-hour clock, the invaders from the parallel dimension, and the adventure of a lifetime. The unremarkable little village remembers its encounter with time itself and a young boy who grew up to be their hero, the new Custodian of Time.
