The Angel of Cumberland

Once, there was a small town named Cumberland. Folks always said its morning view was akin to a painting, with the sun rising over the distant hills that faded into hues of purples, blues, and greens like Mother Nature's own canvas. The town didn’t have much more than a handful of houses, a post office, an old church, and a library that doubled as a school for the town's small population.
But Cumberland had something else that few of them knew of, a secret, shared only amongst the old. It revolved around the town's very own Angel, called Seraphina by the elderlies. However, Seraphina was not an angel in the conventional sense with wings and a halo. Instead, she was a girl but possessed the kindness and innocence only an angel can embody.
The story of Seraphina is one that was etched deep into the history of Cumberland. It starts with her parents, the O'Malleys. Margaret and Thomas O'Malley, bless their souls, were kind-hearted people always ready to lend a helping hand. After years of prayers, they were blessed with a daughter - their Seraphina, their little angel. Little did anyone know, the nickname would become a prophecy in itself.
Seraphina's kindness was evident from an early age. Like the time when she found an injured bird and nursed it back to health, then set it free, forsaking her own joy to play with it. Her golden heart once saved old Mrs. Edwards who had slipped in her bath. The old lady was all alone, and Seraphina, sensing it, quickly fetched help.
Folk's loved her, as did animals. They said the sun seemed to shine a little brighter when she smiled. But there is a reason they say no good story comes without pain. One winter, a lethal disease swept across Cumberland, and many fell prey to the epidemic, including Seraphina's dear parents.
The tragedy left the young girl orphaned, but she remained stoic as if mirroring her parents' strength. Cumberland, bound by communal love, vowed to raise her together. It was then; Seraphina's true angelic nature emerged. With a heart so brave, she tirelessly nursed the sick, never once faltering, nor shying away from the pain or fevered fits of those she helped.
People watched as their young angel provided comfort and hope in face of looming despair. It was a sight that lit a spark in their hearts. Soon everyone started helping each other, crossing over self-created boundaries and prejudices. Cumberland stood together, not just as a town, but as a family.
A town that was once filled with suffering was now radiating with compassion and unity. People believed it was she, Seraphina, their Angel, who had given them this new perspective.
Though the disease eventually left, it had taken many, including Seraphina. It left Cumberland mourning yet grateful. She had reshaped their community, kindled their spirits, and left them with a story, a tale of their Angel in blue overalls.
From then, the tale of Seraphina was whispered to every child born, told with reverence and pride. The epithet of an Angel was thereby canonized, forever part of their folklore. People believed she still watched over them. And for those who took the time to look? Every morning, when sun shone over the hills of Cumberland, they could see a hint of a young girl in blue overalls amidst the rays.
The ending might provoke sadness, a tinge of tragedy. Yet, it implores a legacy of kindness and unity brought upon by a single young girl. It is not a tale of loss but of finding hope and reminding ourselves that even in the darkest hours, there can be light.
