Tales from the Silk Road
In the city of Samarkand, on the flamboyant Silk Road, lived two best friends - Kamil, a gifted silk weaver who could spin the most resplendent of patterns on sumptuous silk, and Hashim, a merchant famed for his diligence and honesty. Despite their difference in professions, their friendship was thicker than the brotherhood.
One night, Hashim had a peculiar dream, in which an elderly angel told him about a mystical creature, the Anka, living on a mountain in the East that laid eggs with shells of pure gold. If obtained, it could bring endless wealth. Struck by the idea of limitless riches, Hashim decided to venture East. He shared this dream with his friend Kamil. After long hours of contemplation, Kamil decided to accompany Hashim, leaving their comfortable lives for the promise of an adventure of a lifetime.
The friends embarked on their journey, traveling across plains and deserts, through charming cities, and over frozen mountain peaks. Along the way, the duo encountered various tasks, tests, and tribulations, including a treacherous river crossing, a thieving caravan, and duplicitous Bedouin traders. These experiences brought them closer to each other; their unity was their strength.
Weeks turned into months, and they finally reached the mountain described in the dream. They could see the golden glow from afar. Hashim was ecstatic, picturing his future wealth and prosperity. They climbed the towering peak, and atop a glimmering nest, they caught sight of their prize - the Anka's golden egg. But before they could approach, the magnificent Anka emerged, with an aura of divine serenity.
'Why do you seek my child?' she questioned majestically. Hashim narrated his dream while Kamil watched on silently. The Anka listened patiently and responded, 'I can give you my egg, but I require something precious in exchange. What do you offer?'
Hashim offered gold, gems, horses even his own house but Anka was unimpressed. It is then that Kamil stepped forward and offered up the loom his mother had given him, the loom on which he had woven all his beautiful silks till date. The loom had no luxurious value, but it held an immeasurable sentimental value for Kamil.
The Anka, seeing his sincerity and understanding the value of the loom to the weaver, accepted his offering. She told them that true wealth lay not in the possession of gold but in the richness of the heart and one's deeds. She handed over the golden egg to Hashim and flew back into the abyss, leaving behind an aura of wisdom and serenity.
The friends descended with the golden egg and Kamil's heart weighed heavy with the loss of his beloved loom. But what Hashim did next left him stunned. Hashim broke the golden egg into two equal halves. Handing one half to Kamil, he said, 'My friend, it's your pure heart that won us this egg. This wealth is as much yours as it’s mine.'
At this juncture, Kamil realized his friend’s pure intentions and genuine regard for him, while Hashim comprehended the true value of their friendship. Overwhelmed, they embraced each other, promising to stay together forever.
As they returned to Samarkand, they were welcomed with cheers and applause. They used their newfound wealth to help their city flourish but remained the same old friends at heart. The story of their journey, the golden egg, and the human values they showcased throughout the journey turned into folklore. And thus, their legend lived on in the annals of the Silk Road, as a testament of their unwavering friendship and their unyielding spirit.
