Mark of the Mermaid
In the ancient world, where mankind's existence intertwined with the mysteries of the supernatural, lived a curious young sailor, Jonas. It was an era filled with fables of mythical creatures; dragons, unicorns, and mermaids. Among them, mermaids were Jonas's fascination, and he yearned for the day he would encounter one.
Waking up to the rhythmic movements of the sea, Jonas would immediately run to the deck, scanning the vast ocean with hopes of spotting a flick of a fin or a shimmering scale. Being a sailor wasn't his career preference but his exploration ambition. He had heard many tales of the mermaids' beauty and seductive voices that lure the seafarers, but there was a particular fable that caught his attention. It spoke of a golden-haired mermaid with eyes as blue as the ocean, owning a mark of a shell on her wrist, sheltering the ultimate power - a wish-granting capability. However, only the purest of hearts could summon this power, else it would bring forth a terrible catastrophe. This legend of the marked mermaid enchanted Jonas, fuelling his thirst for an adventure.
One day, while fishing off the coast just as the sun began to set, he noticed something glistening brightly in the sea. As he moved closer, he saw a figure fluttering in the water. His heart pounded violently as he realised it was a mermaid, the very creature he rooted his childhood dreams in. As he glanced at her wrist, he saw the mark; it was indeed the marked mermaid from his long-beloved fable.
Moved with admiration and excitement, Jonas couldn't contain his presence anymore and called out to the mermaid. Startled, she dove instantly, disappearing into the vast blue water. Despite numerous attempts to call her back, Jonas was left staring at an empty sea. Fear of losing his only chance at his childhood dream, he dove into the sea, hoping to take a closer look. The mermaid, out of intrigue or trust, showed herself.
Surprisingly, they shared an instant bond. Communicating through gestures, Jonas learned her name was Arielle. He visited every night, watching her swim gracefully, sharing tales of his world, and cherishing an unusual friendship. But with time, Jonas yearned for his dream – to call upon the wish-granting power. However, he had no selfish desires, he simply wanted to exist in harmony with these mesmerizing creatures, to make his world believe in their existence and protect them.
One night, with a hesitant heart, he gently touched the shell mark on Arielle's wrist. Suddenly, the sea around them started swirling creating a massive whirlpool, and a bright light emerged from Arielle's mark. Terror gripped Jonas, but he held on. He remembered the legend, only the purest of hearts would be granted a wish, else it would lead to a catastrophe. Bracing himself, he shut his eyes and uttered his wish.
When he opened his eyes, he found himself on the deck of his boat with Arielle, now transformed into a human. Around them, surfaced numerous mermaids; to his surprise, they could stay outside water. His wish was granted; humans and mermaids coexisted in harmony, living evidence to the world's myth. The mermaids sang their beautiful songs, captivating the townsfolk. Instead of being threatened, the mermaids were accepted and treated as friends.
The tale of Jonas and Arielle, his friendship, and the magical wish spread across the lands, turning a fable into an enduring legend. Jonas, the curious boy, was now etched in history as Jonas, the wish-bearer. His encounter with the marked mermaid not only allowed the humans to believe and coexist with the mermaids but also illustrated the true power of purity and selfless desires.
