In the Shadow of the Dragon
Once upon a time in a little village named Sundarban situated in the verdant vales of Nepal. The idyllic location was obstructed by a grand mountain known as the sacred Kanchenjunga, its pinnacles cloaked in blizzards and clouds, and its edges, sharp like the teeth of a dragon.
A formidable yet mesmerizing creature, known as 'Druk', the mythical dragon, is believed to dwell atop this mountain. The inhabitants of Sundarban harbored a mixed feeling of reverence and dread for Druk. Their lives revolved around the appeasement of this mystical creature, as they believed their welfare was interconnected with Druk's satisfaction.
In Sundarban lived a young shepherd named Arjun. His heart was as brave as his frame was frail. He had motherless since infancy and was the sole caretaker of his aging father. Arjun's days were speckled with tending his sheep, nurturing dreams of exploring Kanchenjunga, and deciphering the mystery of Druk.
During a village ceremony, a prophecy from the oracle foretold an impending disaster. He predicted that Druk, dissatisfied with the villagers' offerings, would descend from Kanchenjunga, bringing forth an onslaught of tempests and frosts that could devastate the serene Sundarban.
Overcome with fear, the villagers decided to offer the grandest tribute to Druk, culminating in the sacrifice of a young man. The misfortune fell onto Arjun, as the village chief drew his name from the lot.
Arjun, however, was resolute. He was unwilling to surrender his life without encountering Druk. Proposing an audacious plan, he convinced the villagers that he'd climb up to Kanchenjunga, reason with Druk, and negotiate for their village's survival.
Armed with courage, Arjun embarked on the treacherous path to Kanchenjunga. His journey was fraught with complications and hardship, but his resolve remained unbroken. Days turned into nights, nights into days, and after rigorous climbing, Arjun finally reached the dragon's lair.
There, nestled amongst the clouds, was Druk. A creature of intimidating magnificence and celestial grandeur. Arjun, swallowing his fear, approached Druk. He pleaded for his village's survival and beseeched Druk to view them with kindness rather than wrath.
Druk, perplexed by Arjun's gallantry, contemplated his request. He struck a bargain with Arjun- he was to return every year with tales of his inspiring deeds for Druk’s entertainment in return for the safety of Sundarban.
Arjun, grateful for Druk’s mercy, accepted this deal and traveled back to his village, where he was greeted as a hero. Thereafter, he performed acts of valor and kindness throughout the year, each more inspiring than the last - saving his village from famine, protecting them from marauders, and aiding other neighboring villages.
Each year, he climbed Kanchenjunga, regaling Druk with his tales of bravery that won him further favor with Druk. Safe under Arjun’s protection, Sundarban flourished, becoming prosperous and famous for his brave son.
Arjun's name echoed around the world, not as a tribute to a mythical dragon, but as a beacon of courage, resilience, and benevolence. Thus, Arjun transformed from a humble shepherd to a legendary hero- a testament to the power of courage, negotiation, and kindness.
