Esme and the Dragon
In the far off lands of Mistheria, where sparkling rivers run and wolves play under the silver moonlight, there was a little village named Cyllene. The village was known for its legendary emerald-green forest, Celestial forest, named after the luminescent fireflies that filled the woods at night.
Cyllene was inhabited by a lively community where everyone lived harmoniously. Among these villagers was a humble blacksmith named Eldric, who had a lovely daughter named Esme. Esme, unlike typical girls of her age, wasn't fond of needlework or baking. Instead, her heart was captivated by the magical world of storytelling and her father’s tales of ancient knights & mythical beasts used to captivate her.
One day, news came of a fire-breathing dragon residing in the Celestial forest, putting everyone on edge. It had burned the crops and turned the enchanting Celestial forest into a barren land. Equipped with a brave heart and a desire to protect her village, Esme decided to take matters into her hands. Esme persuaded Eldric to forge her a sword with his best steel. Eldric, knowing the fearless spirit of his daughter and her unwavering determination, begrudgingly agreed.
After days of preparation and countless hours of training, she finally ventured into the forest to confront the beast. The sight of the once enchanting Celestial forest, now a barren field of ashes, broke her heart. She marched forward, her resolve unwavering.
As she came upon the cave where the dragon was rumoured to reside, a colossal silhouette emerged, with scales mirroring the darkest of nights and eyes glowing infernally red. It roared, shaking the earth beneath her, but Esme held her ground. With each parry and thrust of the sword, Esme, for the very first time, realized the true essence of the stories she grew up listening to- they weren't just about bravery and victories, but also about pain, sacrifice, loss, and more significantly perseverance.
The dragon, realizing that its opponent isn't backing down, changed its strategy. It ceased its attack and began to speak. To Esme's astonishment, the dragon, named Argoth, was an age-old guardian of the Celestial Forest who was cursed by an evil sorcerer. Bound to protect the forest, Argoth had no control over the fire, and it was the source of destruction.
Moved by Argoth's tale, Esme made a deal; she would venture to the ominous Mt. Kraken to retrieve the artifact capable of freeing Argoth from his curse, in return, Argoth would vow to rebuild the Celestial Forest and protect Cyllene. The dragon agreed, and so did our brave maiden embark on another quest which took weeks, battling all kinds of unknown creatures, enduring harsh weather yet never let her determination fade. She returned victorious, holding the artifact – a golden spear in her hand.
Esme struck Argoth with this spear, breaking the curse. Argoth, now free, kept his word. He helped restore the Celestial Forest, turning it back into the resplendent forest it used to be. More lush and dense than it ever was, and the villagers, seeing this, rejoiced. Eldric, filled with pride, declared, “Today, you are not only my daughter but also Cyllene's saviour.”
This humble tale of bravery, perseverance, and kindness passed down through generations in Cyllene, encouraging others to remember that even amidst darkness, there always lies a way to the dawn. With this brave maiden’s tale, the villagers learned that not every beast is a monster, and every story doesn't end at 'happily ever after'; instead, it's the journey that matters.
