Between The Lines of Time

Once upon a time, in the bustling city of San Francisco, there lived a wise old man named Albert. He spent his mornings selling newspapers at the corner of Market and Powell. The way he passionately engaged every customer with endearing stories about history made him popular amongst locals and tourists alike.
Albert wasn't ordinary. He was born with a unique gift - the ability to glimpse into brief moments of an individual's past. While holding an exchange with his customers, he'd often receive visions of significant events in their history. Despite his ability to peek into their days of yore, he swore never to intervene or change the course of their stories.
On a cool, breezy day in August, a young woman, Clara, approached
Albert's newspaper stand, just as she'd do every Wednesday morning. Her charm and the faint scent of her lavender perfume always stood out. Amidst the exchange of words and newspapers, Albert had a vision. He saw Clara, young and scared, hiding beneath her bed while her parents fiercely quarreled upstairs. That moment left a scar in her heart, leading her into solitude and creating walls around her emotions.
Moved by Clara's story, Albert broke his vow for the first time. Determined to make a difference, he began subtly inserting articles about forgiveness and self-love into Clara's handpicked newspapers. Articles that carried messages meant to inspire her to process her past and maybe, just maybe, find a way to move on.
Week by week, Clara subconsciously started pouring over the articles Albert had meticulously chosen. She began questioning her past, her behavior, and her choices. Bit by bit, Clara found herself on a journey of healing and self-discovery. She learned to forgive her parents, and in doing so, forgive herself.
Months went by, Clara evolved from a solitary figure into a vibrant young woman, eager to open up and love again. She made friends, fell in love, and trusted that world was more than just hostility she grew up with. All the while, she remained blissfully unaware of Albert’s small, yet significant role behind her transformation.
On the fateful day in March, Clara decided to leave San Francisco and explore the world. She visited Albert for the last time, holding a folded paper in her hands. Handing it to Albert, she spoke, 'I found this tucked inside a newspaper a few weeks ago. It's a thank you note from someone I don't know, thanking me for becoming who I am.'
Albert unfolded the note and realized it was a note he wrote while daydreaming and accidentally left in Clara's bundle of papers. The note read, 'To the girl who hides behind her past, thank you for stepping out into the sunlight again.' Clara chuckled and added, 'Whoever wrote this saw the old and new me, it seems. I thought it best to hand it over to the only person who's been there through it all.'
With that, Clara left, leaving Albert teary-eyed but joyful at the change he had initiated. Breaking his vow had led Clara towards the light; they'd both found healing in the process.
And so, as the sun set that evening, painting the city in hues of orange, Albert stood at his stall with a warm smile. His ability to glimpse into the past had finally done more than just letting him become an ancillary to the stories—as that day, he became a part of a story that ended with sunshine.
To this day, everyone who'd walk by the end of Market and Powell streets, buying newspapers, would hear about the tale of Clara and Albert—the young woman who overcame her past, and the wise old man who unwittingly nudged her towards it.
