Instead of the warm, welcoming glows of electric lights, the residents of Lucenia favored a more traditional, elemental approach. Ella was mesmerized by fireflies, she often observed how these luminescent bugs lit up the night with their soft, ethereal glow, and she believed that their light might be the answer to Lucenia’s power problem.

She hypothesized that the chemical reaction in a firefly causing illumination could be replicated and harnessed in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner.
